BOB BLOCK: A PHOTO GALLERY

Bob Block with his mother and cat, 1974

Bob's mother, Berenice Block, came to visit us in our new house in Iowa City, about 1973. Our black cat Underfoot, young and skinny then, is keeping them company. Bob's recorder students will remember a much older, fatter Underfoot climbing into their laps as they played duets with Bob.

When Bob mentioned to friends that we were in the market for a kitten, a particularly crafty friend with lots of spare kittens brought us two nearly identical purring black blobs of fur and invited us to choose one, knowing perfectly well that Bob was too softhearted to turn one of them away. We named them after their two most salient characteristics -- they were always Underfoot, but fortunately they were Portable enough to be bodily removed from danger.

We suspect Underfoot was weaned too early, because she had a passionate attachment to bob's ears, which she loved to suck, often at somewhat inconvenient moments.

Marylaine Block with Brian and Twolmondeley

Marylaine Block with baby Brian. Only two weeks old and he already understood that his function in life was to support cats. This is Twolmondeley (pronounced in the English manner, Twomley).

This is Marylaine with Pudney, the cat that originally belonged to Bob's sister Jean. Jean's husband was becoming progressively more allergic to cats, so Jean flew to Iowa City from Columbus to deliver Pudney to us.

Cats made working at home somewhat challenging for Bob.
